Battlefield takes this idea a step further, and offers unprecedented hints of Doctor's off-screen exploits. In a tale where the definition of magic (or science) is ,merely a matter of time, accepting that he is Merlin is hardly a challenge. The revelation, offered with scant explanation, evokes a potent new mystique around the Doctor, and creates a disconcerting sense that he is hiding something from the viewer.
